Bethesda recently released a new update for Fallout 4, known as “Next Gen Update 2”, which aimed to address the issues from the previous update and introduce new graphics settings for PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, upon closer inspection of the patch notes, players have been left questioning whether they should trust Bethesda’s recommendations when it comes to adjusting these settings.

The update allows players to control their graphic fidelity and performance, a highly-requested feature by the community. Nevertheless, Bethesda “highly recommends” sticking to the default settings, raising concerns among players. This advice comes across as contradictory, as players would expect the developers to encourage experimenting with the new settings to enhance their gaming experience.

Players can now choose between different frame rate targets, including 30, 40, and 60 FPS, with 60 FPS being the default. However, selecting a frame rate target of 40 requires a display capable of supporting 120Hz. Additionally, there are two graphical prioritization modes: visual and performance, with performance being the default. Players can switch between these modes while aiming to maintain the frame rate target, as recommended by Bethesda.

The wording used by Bethesda in the patch notes raises eyebrows, as players question the reliability of the recommendations provided. The notion of maintaining the frame rate target “highly recommended” by the developers feels counterintuitive when considering the purpose of introducing new graphics settings. It leaves players wondering if these changes will indeed improve their gameplay experience or if they should adhere to the defaults as advised.

Although the patch promises general stability improvements and fixes for visual issues, some players remain skeptical about the overall impact of the update. Performance analyses are yet to be conducted to determine the effectiveness of the new patch. With little mention of improvements for the PC community, except for a fix regarding widescreen mode, players are left questioning the significance of this update for their gaming experience.

The Fallout 4 Update 2 brings mixed feelings among players, with doubts surrounding Bethesda’s recommendations for the new graphics settings. While the patch introduces long-awaited features, the cautious advice provided by the developers leaves players unsure about the benefits of adjusting these settings. As players await performance analyses and further feedback, the future of Fallout 4’s gameplay experience remains uncertain.
