Imagine leaving your Windows XP machine unprotected, with no firewall or anti-virus software, just like in the good old days. How long do you think it would take for malicious software to infect your PC? YouTuber Eric Parker decided to find out by setting up a virtual Windows XP instance and exposing it to the internet.

After just 10 minutes, Parker discovered a trojan named conhoz.exe running in Task Manager on the vulnerable machine. Within a few more minutes, a new user had been added, along with several new processes, including an FTP server. The machine was completely compromised within 15 minutes, with multiple malware processes running and the bad guys setting up a new admin account and an FTP server locally.

Tracing the malware’s communication led Parker to the Russian Federation, where he speculated that the attackers might be attempting to create a botnet or set up a spam email server using his compromised machine. Subsequent investigation revealed even more malware, including another Trojan and a rootkit. A scan with Malwarebytes uncovered a total of eight malicious programs running, including four trojans, two backdoors, and a couple of adware apps.

This experiment serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking behind firewalls and malware protections on our PCs. While once it was common practice to regularly check running processes in Task Manager, today we often take for granted the security measures that protect us from malware attacks. The rapid infection of Parker’s virtual XP machine highlights the constant threat posed by malicious actors on the internet.

The ease and speed at which an unprotected Windows XP machine can be compromised by malware is alarming. This experiment underscores the importance of maintaining up-to-date security measures on all devices connected to the internet. The digital landscape is fraught with dangers, and it is crucial for users to be vigilant and proactive in protecting their systems from potential threats. Stay safe and secure online.
