In the fast-paced world of technology, startups often emerge with innovative ideas and ambitious goals. However, not all of them succeed in capturing the market and gaining widespread acceptance. One such example is Humane, a startup behind the AI Pin wearable computer, which has faced criticism and is now on the hunt for a potential buyer for its business.
Led by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, Humane set out to revolutionize the wearable AI assistant concept with the AI Pin. Priced at $699, the device failed to live up to the expectations set by its founders. Users complained about slow responses, an underdeveloped user experience, and a lack of the promised always-on AI assistant feature.
Humane developed its own operating system, CosmOS, to power the AI Pin. The device interacts with a network of AI models to provide answers to voice queries and analyze objects captured by its built-in camera. In an attempt to reduce smartphone dependence, the device projects a laser “display” onto the wearer’s inner palm. However, a monthly subscription fee is required to keep the device active, adding to the overall cost for consumers.
Despite raising $230 million from investors and being valued at $850 million in 2023, Humane’s first product received widespread criticism from reviewers. The software was deemed underbaked and inconsistent, while hardware issues such as poor battery life and overheating further tarnished the device’s reputation. Humane has promised to address some of these issues through firmware updates and the integration of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model.
With its reputation damaged and facing an uphill battle in the competitive AI market, Humane is now seeking a buyer for its business. The startup is reportedly seeking a price between $750 million and $1 billion, a figure that may be challenging to achieve given the device’s poor reception. Potential buyers such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft have already established themselves in the AI industry, making it unclear how much value Humane’s intellectual property would bring to their existing efforts.
Humane’s journey serves as a cautionary tale for startups entering the AI industry. Despite having innovative ideas and experienced leadership, the startup struggled to deliver a compelling product that resonated with consumers. As the search for a buyer continues, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Humane and its ambitious yet ultimately flawed AI Pin wearable computer.
