Trying to get the new RPG game Wuthering Waves to play on the Steam Deck has been a frustrating experience. Despite efforts to work around its release on the Epic Games Store and using Proton GE, the game still refuses to boot up properly. It seems that no amount of software tweaks, compatibility tools, or digging into installation folders can solve this issue. As a result, I have reluctantly accepted defeat in my attempts to get the game running smoothly on the Steam Deck.

Initially, I tried installing the Epic app directly or via Lutris and managed to reach the launcher stage by downloading the standalone Windows installer from Wuthering Waves’ website. However, even after adding the launcher as a non-Steam game and forcing it to launch with the latest version of Proton GE, the game still would not start. Despite reinstalling, switching Proton versions, and trying to run the Epic launcher in Desktop Mode on the Steam Deck, none of these solutions proved to be effective in getting Wuthering Waves to launch successfully.

It is disappointing to encounter such compatibility issues with Wuthering Waves on SteamOS, despite the continuous efforts by Valve and other developers to improve compatibility. While it is tempting to express frustration over these challenges, it is important to recognize that such situations can occur even with well-established platforms like SteamOS.

One potential alternative for those unwilling to wait for a fix is to run the Android version of Wuthering Waves on the Steam Deck using Waydroid. This tool can create a virtual Android system within the SteamOS, allowing players to access the game in a different way. However, it is worth noting that this process can be complex and may involve a significant amount of command line operations. Despite the challenges, patience and persistence could eventually lead to success in getting Wuthering Waves to run on the Steam Deck.

By acknowledging my struggles in getting Wuthering Waves to play on the Steam Deck, I am opening myself up to the possibility of others finding a solution more quickly. Sharing my experiences and challenges in this process can help foster a sense of community and collaboration among players facing similar issues. While the journey may be filled with obstacles, it is through perseverance and a willingness to explore alternative solutions that we can overcome even the most challenging compatibility issues.
