When I first started playing Hollow Knight, it seemed like just another indie game with decent movement and fun combat. However, as I delved deeper into the world of Hallownest, I realized that there was something more profound hidden beneath the surface. The story of the forgotten kingdom and its inhabitants began to resonate with me in a way I hadn’t expected.

Upon my return to the game after a year-long hiatus, I decided to approach it with a different mindset. Instead of rushing through the main objectives, I took my time to explore every nook and cranny of the kingdom. By using map markers to guide my exploration, I discovered hidden passages, secret areas, and important lore that I had previously overlooked.

One of the most striking aspects of Hollow Knight is its worldbuilding. The intricate design of Hallownest and the rich lore that accompanies it add depth and complexity to the game. As I uncovered more of the kingdom’s history and unravelled the mysteries hidden within its depths, I found myself becoming emotionally invested in the fate of its inhabitants.

As I progressed through the game, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sadness for the fallen kingdom and its tragic past. The NPCs I encountered along the way each had their own stories to tell, and I found myself mourning the losses they had suffered. The Kingdom’s Edge music, once merely background noise, now stirred deep emotions within me, evoking a sense of melancholy and nostalgia.

After 22 hours of gameplay, I finally reached the end of the main storyline. While I know there is more to uncover with the Dream Nail ending, I am content with where I have left things for now. Hollow Knight’s true strength lies not just in its combat or movement, but in the depth of its storytelling and worldbuilding. Cornifer’s maps may guide the way, but it is the exploration of the kingdom itself that truly reveals the game’s hidden treasures.

My journey through Hallownest was not just a quest for completion, but a profound exploration of a world filled with beauty, sadness, and complex emotions. Hollow Knight may have started as a simple indie game for me, but it has evolved into an unforgettable experience that has left a lasting impact on my gaming journey.
