Instagram has recently introduced a new feature called “limits” which allows users to have more control over their interactions on the platform. This feature enables users to hide direct messages and comments from accounts that may be harassing them. While initially designed to help creators deal with harassment campaigns, this feature is available to all users who may be facing unwanted messages and comments from bullies and other negative influencers. By setting limits, users can effectively mute incoming messages from everyone except those on their close friends list.
How the Limits Feature Works
When a user decides to limit interactions from everyone except close friends, they will only see direct messages, tags, and mentions from individuals on their close friends list. This means that users not on the close friends list can still interact with the user’s posts, but their updates will not be visible to the user. Additionally, the accounts that have been limited will not be notified that their content has been hidden. Users are also given the option to view or ignore the limited comments and direct messages.
To activate the limits feature, users can simply tap on their profile, select the hamburger menu located in the top-right corner of the screen, and choose “Limited interactions.” From there, users can toggle on limits for accounts that aren’t following them, recent followers, or everyone except their close friends. Additionally, Instagram has expanded its restrict feature, which now allows users to prevent a specific individual from tagging or mentioning them in addition to hiding their comments.
Instagram’s introduction of these new safety features comes at a time when the platform is facing increased scrutiny from the US government regarding the safety of its young users. Earlier this year, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, implemented a feature that prevents adults from messaging minors on both Instagram and Facebook by default. Furthermore, the company has taken steps to hide content related to suicide and eating disorders from teenagers on its platforms.
