AMD recently introduced new variants to the Ryzen 5000 Series during the Computex show. These new variants, Ryzen 9 5900XT and Ryzen 7 5800XT, offer enhanced features and capabilities, adding to the existing lineup of CPUs that were initially launched in October 2020.
Ryzen 7 5800XT: A Closer Look
The Ryzen 7 5800XT features eight Zen 3-spec cores on a single CCD, connected to AMD’s I/O and memory controller die. With eight cores and 16 threads, the 5800XT maintains a 105 W TDP and 36MB of cache, similar to the older 5800X model. The key difference lies in the maximum boost clock speed, with the new 5800XT reaching 4.8 GHz compared to the 4.7 GHz of its predecessor.
Pricing and Performance
While the Ryzen 7 5800XT was initially listed at $249, AMD later clarified that it was an error. The actual pricing is yet to be confirmed, but considering that the older model, 5800X, is currently available for $198.98 on Newegg, the pricing of the new variant may not be as competitive as expected.
The Ryzen 9 5900XT stands out as a 16-core chip, positioned between the existing Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X models. With 16 cores now available in the 5900XT, users can enjoy a significant upgrade from the previous 12-core 5900X without having to invest in the more expensive 5950X model.
The Ryzen 9 5900XT was originally listed at a price point of $359, offering a substantial improvement in core count compared to the 5950X, which was priced at $799. However, current sale prices on Newegg show the 5950X available for $359 as well, making the new 5900XT seem less enticing in terms of pricing.
As AMD adjusts the pricing of the new Ryzen 5000 Series variants to stay competitive in the market, consumers may see a shift in the overall pricing strategy. While the initial prices may not be as appealing, potential adjustments in the future could make the 5900XT a compelling choice for users looking to upgrade to a 16-core CPU on their AM4 motherboards.
The addition of the Ryzen 7 5800XT and Ryzen 9 5900XT brings new options to the Ryzen 5000 Series lineup. While the performance enhancements are notable, the pricing aspect remains a critical factor for consumers to consider when evaluating these new CPU offerings from AMD.
