Amazon recently announced that it is discontinuing its Astro for Business robot, a 20-pound wheeled robot that was originally launched in November 2023. The company will be issuing full refunds to customers who purchased the $2,349.99 bot, along with a $300 credit. Despite not revealing the exact number of business bots sold, Amazon’s VP of hardware engineering emphasized the company’s commitment to focusing on home robotics instead of enterprise solutions.

According to an internal memo shared by Amazon, the decision to discontinue Astro for Business was made to channel resources into the development of consumer robotics products for the home. The company believes that advancements in generative AI and the progress made in home robotics justify shifting its focus entirely to this sector. While this move may disappoint existing customers of the Astro for Business robot, Amazon is determined to provide a seamless transition by offering refunds and credits to support alternative workplace solutions.

Existing customers of the Astro for Business robot will receive a full refund for their device purchases, which will be automatically issued back to the original payment method. Additionally, Amazon is providing a $300 credit to support customers in finding a replacement solution for their workplace needs. While the Astro for Business device will cease to function on September 25th, customers are encouraged to recycle their devices through Amazon’s Recycling Program. This program covers the costs associated with shipping and recycling the devices and accessories.

Amazon has been proactive in communicating with its Astro for Business customers about the discontinuation of the robot. The company has sent emails outlining the changes and providing detailed instructions on how customers can receive refunds, credits, and participate in the Astro Day 1 Editions Program. Customers with Astro Secure subscriptions will also be notified about the discontinuation of the service and will receive refunds for any unused, pre-paid subscription fees.

While the Astro for Business robot has been discontinued, Amazon is hinting at a potential successor in the form of an Astro for Home robot. The company’s commitment to developing consumer robotics solutions for the home remains unwavering, as it continues to explore innovative features such as conversational generative AI. With leaked internal documents suggesting new capabilities for the Astro for Home robot, customers can look forward to enhanced functionalities and improved user experiences.

Amazon’s decision to discontinue the Astro for Business robot reflects the company’s strategic shift towards prioritizing home robotics solutions. While this may come as a disappointment to some customers, Amazon is taking proactive steps to ensure a smooth transition and provide support for workplace alternatives. As the company continues to innovate in the field of consumer robotics, the future looks promising for the development of the Amazon Astro for Home robot and its potential to revolutionize home automation.
