Star Wars Outlaws, the latest game from Ubisoft, is shaking up the traditional open-world formula by taking a different approach to character progression. Unlike other games that rely on levels and stat boosts, Star Wars Outlaws focuses on more organic upgrades tied to unique experiences. Game director Mathias Karlson explains that players will unlock skills and upgrade gear by interacting with “full-on characters” scattered throughout the game world, rather than simply purchasing items from vendors or completing mundane tasks for NPCs.
Karlson emphasizes that players will not know exactly who these characters are or what they have to offer from the start. Instead, the game encourages players to explore and interact with the world to discover these characters and embark on adventures with them. The goal is to create a sense of discovery and immersion in the game world, rather than just handing out upgrades for the sake of progression.
Narrative director Navid Khavari provides an example of how this system works in action. Players may accompany an expert character on a journey, who will teach the protagonist, Kay, a new skill and upgrade her blaster along the way. This approach ties character progression directly to the player’s experience in the game world, making it feel more meaningful and connected to the overall narrative.
Breaking the Mold
By eschewing traditional RPG mechanics in favor of a more experiential approach to character progression, Star Wars Outlaws is setting itself apart from other open-world games. The emphasis on interacting with dynamic characters and engaging in adventures with them adds depth and richness to the gameplay, making each upgrade feel earned and significant.
Star Wars Outlaws is revolutionizing character progression in open-world gaming by focusing on natural upgrades and experiential interactions with characters. By moving away from traditional systems-driven progression, the game aims to create a more immersive and meaningful experience for players, where every upgrade is a product of their journey in the game world. This innovative approach sets Star Wars Outlaws apart as a game that values player experience and narrative depth above all else.
