Laptops have become an essential tool in our daily lives, offering remarkable capabilities in a compact form. However, the issue of portability still remains, as even the smallest and lightest laptops are not exactly pocket-friendly. Ling Long, a start-up based in China, has come up with a unique solution to this problem by introducing a portable PC that eliminates the need for a traditional display. This innovative approach involves fitting a hinge in the keyboard, allowing the entire device to be conveniently carried in your back pocket.

The new product from Ling Long, which is yet to be officially named, was unveiled on Bilibili and has caught the attention of tech enthusiasts worldwide. The device features a compact keyboard with a tiny trackpad, devoid of a display or integrated thumbsticks and triggers commonly found in handheld gaming PCs. Instead, it comprises two frames connected via a hinge, housing a 60 Wh battery in one piece and a small motherboard equipped with a Ryzen 7 8840U processor, DDR5 RAM, an NVMe M.2 2230 socket, and multiple USB ports in the other piece.

The AMD APU powering the portable PC boasts eight cores, 16 threads, a 5.1 GHz boost clock, and a 30 W TDP, making it a highly capable chip for various computing tasks. Graphics performance is handled by the integrated Radeon 780M with 768 RDNA 3 shaders, allowing for smooth 1080p gaming on low settings. While gaming is possible on this device, its primary target audience seems to be office workers who are constantly on the move and prefer a lightweight alternative to traditional laptops.

Compact Yet Powerful

Despite its compact size of 15 x 10 cm (5.9 x 3.9 inches) when folded and weighing only 800 g (1.8 lbs), the Ling Long portable PC offers impressive storage and memory configurations. Users can choose between models with either 16 or 32 GB of DDR5 RAM and 512 GB or 1 TB of PCIe 4.0 storage, catering to the needs of office professionals. Moreover, the competitive pricing of CNY 2,999 (roughly $413) for the base model makes it a more affordable option compared to other high-end laptops available in the market.

While Ling Long’s portable PC is currently targeted at the Chinese market, there is speculation about its potential availability in other regions. With its unique design and competitive pricing, the device could appeal to a broader audience seeking a lightweight and powerful computing solution. As the tech industry continues to evolve, innovative approaches like the one taken by Ling Long are instrumental in shaping the future of portable PCs.
