The gaming community has been buzzing with news about the instability issues surrounding Intel’s 13th and 14th Gen processors. Alderon Games, the developer behind the popular dinosaur MMO Path of Titans, has recently made a bold move by swapping out its Intel-based servers for AMD processors due to these ongoing issues.
The Problem
According to Alderon founder Matthew Cassells, the company has been facing “significant” instability issues with the Intel processors. Reports have shown that there have been thousands of crashes on gamers’ CPUs, leading to concerns about potential corruption of SSDs and memory. Cassells goes on to mention that in their experience, all affected CPUs tend to deteriorate over time, ultimately resulting in complete failure.
On the other hand, RAD Game Tools, a company referenced by Cassells in his blog post, argues that only a small fraction of the processors are actually affected. This conflicting information has added to the confusion surrounding the situation. Intel initially pointed to motherboard overclocking settings as a possible cause for the crashes on home computers, but this explanation does not hold up for server hardware, which is typically set to more conservative settings.
Other game developers have also come forward with their experiences regarding the Intel processors. A Warframe developer stated that the majority of crashes recorded were due to driver failures in the 13th and 14th Gen processors. However, the installation of a recent BIOS update seemed to resolve the issue for one staff member, despite Intel’s previous claims that the update did not address the root cause of the instability.
The ongoing issues with Intel’s 13th and 14th Gen processors have raised serious concerns within the gaming community. The decision by Alderon Games to switch to AMD processors highlights the severity of the situation and has prompted other hosting providers to reconsider their hardware choices.
