The PC market has faced its fair share of challenges in recent times, especially following a two-year period of declining sales. However, the latest data from market analysts IDC for the second quarter of 2024 brings some positive news. Interestingly, while the overall PC sales are showing signs of recovery, the market in China has witnessed a significant decline. IDC reports that if China is omitted from the data, the rest of the world experienced a growth of over 5%. In terms of market share, Lenovo managed to slightly widen its lead to 22.7% in Q2 2024, up from 22.5% in the same quarter the previous year. The dominance of laptops over desktops is a key contributing factor to these rankings, with Lenovo’s focus on laptops playing a significant role in its success.
The IDC report also sheds light on the performance of smaller brands, which collectively experienced a slight decline of 1.1% in sales. This indicates a consolidation of market share among major players like Lenovo, HP, and Apple, the latter gaining ground with an 8.8% market share thanks to strong MacBook sales. With an estimated 64.9 million PC sales in the second quarter of 2024, the year is expected to close with nearly 250 million units sold worldwide.
