Hideki Kamiya, the renowned director behind beloved video game titles such as Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and the Wonderful 101, recently expressed his interest in creating sequels to Okami and Viewtiful Joe. After departing from Platinum Games, Kamiya mentioned during a conversation with fellow Capcom veteran Ikumi Nakamura that he is not retired as a game creator, although jokingly claiming to be “unemployed” at the moment. He emphasized the importance of collaborating with friends in the industry to bring these projects to fruition.
Reflecting on his work on Okami, Kamiya expressed a sense of unfinished business, noting that the story concluded midway and that he feels a responsibility to fulfill fans’ desires for a sequel. He referred to a recent Capcom survey that highlighted Okami as a high-ranking choice among players when asked about their favorite characters and series, indicating a potential demand for a continuation of the game. Kamiya urged Capcom to join forces with him to create the sequel that fans are eagerly anticipating.
Regarding the possibility of a sequel to Okami, Kamiya acknowledged the unresolved nature of the original game’s storyline and his desire to provide closure for fans. He emphasized the importance of creators fulfilling their duty to deliver sequels that resonate with the audience’s expectations. Despite having moved on from Okami in recent years, Kamiya expressed a lingering sense of obligation to revisit the title and expand upon its rich mythology. He called upon Capcom to collaborate with him on this project.
In addition to Okami, Kamiya also expressed a similar sentiment towards creating a sequel to Viewtiful Joe, a distinctive side-scrolling beat ’em up series that gained a dedicated following in the early 2000s. He lamented the relative obscurity of the franchise, attributing its lack of recognition to its niche appeal. Kamiya highlighted the potential for Viewtiful Joe 3 to garner mainstream attention, particularly given the character’s appearance in crossover titles like Marvel vs Capcom. He underscored the need for a revitalization of the series to expose more players to its unique charm.
Hideki Kamiya’s aspirations to develop sequels to Okami and Viewtiful Joe exemplify his commitment to honoring fan expectations and enriching the worlds he has created. By seeking collaboration with industry peers and advocating for the continuation of these beloved franchises, Kamiya demonstrates his dedication to delivering memorable gaming experiences for audiences old and new.
