Google recently announced the integration of Nest Hello doorbell in the Google Home app, allowing users to transfer the Nest Doorbell from the Nest app to the Google Home app. Additionally, Google is making its garage door detection feature available to all users with compatible hardware, alerting users when their garage door is left open. This feature, previously in Public Preview, is now accessible to all Nest Aware subscribers in the US and Canada.

The garage door detection feature uses a Nest Cam to alert users when their garage door opens, closes, or is left open. Unlike smart garage door controllers that require additional hardware, this feature simply requires users to point their compatible Google Nest cam at the garage door. While it cannot control the garage door, it provides status notifications, enhancing home security.

Nest Hello users will soon have the option to transfer their video doorbell to the Google Home app, allowing them to manage the doorbell, view recorded videos, and connect it to other devices in Google Home for automations. This transition aims to consolidate the functionalities of the doorbell into one app, providing a seamless user experience.

Google has been gradually moving legacy Nest cameras to the Google Home app over the past couple of years. While the Nest Cam Indoor and Nest Cam Outdoor have already transitioned, the integration of the Nest Hello doorbell will be welcomed by users. Google has stated its commitment to transitioning additional Nest devices into the Home app, although some devices such as the Nest Cam IQ indoor and outdoor, as well as the Nest Protect smoke alarm, are still only accessible in the Nest app.

The integration of Nest Hello doorbell and garage door detection feature in the Google Home app offers users greater convenience and accessibility to their smart home devices. By centralizing control and management in one app, users can streamline their smart home experience and utilize features like camera events as triggers for automations. However, the slow migration process of legacy Nest devices to the Home app may cause some users to face challenges in accessing all features in one place.

Google’s efforts to integrate the Nest Hello doorbell and garage door detection feature into the Google Home app demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the user experience. By consolidating functionalities and expanding accessibility, Google is providing users with a more cohesive and intuitive smart home ecosystem. As the migration of additional Nest devices continues, users can look forward to a more integrated and seamless smart home experience.
