Google Photos is making a significant change with the introduction of a new feature called Collections, aimed at enhancing the user experience and making content finding easier than ever before. This new destination will house all albums, including private albums, shared albums, and new folders for people, pets, documents, and places. The changes are believed to be in preparation for Google’s upcoming Gemini-powered Ask Photos assistant, set to launch this summer.
Google Photos is not just introducing Collections but also redesigning the search tab for a more user-friendly experience. The previous image tiles have been replaced with a list of suggested options such as Screenshots, Selfies, and Menus. This redesign aims to streamline the search process and make it more intuitive for users.
The Collections view, which replaces the existing library tab, is currently rolling out to all Android and iOS Google Photos users. However, it may take a few weeks for the feature to be available on all devices. Within the Collections tab, users can easily switch between different album views like “All,” “Shared with me,” and “My albums.” Moreover, users will find folders for “Favorites” and “Trash” displayed prominently at the top.
Following user complaints about the placement of Locked Folders at the top of the Collections view, Google has decided to no longer suggest them in that position. Additionally, the Utilities folder is being completely removed, with its tools being relocated within the interface. For instance, creating a Locked Folder can now be done by scrolling to the bottom of the Collections view.
Enhanced User Experience
Google Photos is not only simplifying the process of finding and organizing content but also adding new features to enhance the overall user experience. Users can now easily import images, create albums, collages, and highlight videos by tapping the “+” symbol. Moreover, tasks like managing photo frames and freeing up space on the device are now conveniently located under the user’s Google Photos account profile.
