The latest figures from Mercury Research reveal that AMD has been steadily increasing its market share in both desktop and laptop PCs, as well as in servers, at the expense of Intel. In the second quarter of 2024, AMD’s desktop x86 CPU share grew to 23%, up from 19.4% compared to the same period last year. Similarly, AMD’s market share in laptops rose to 20.3%, up from 16.5% year-on-year. In the server market, AMD saw a significant improvement from 18.6% to 24.1%, all between Q2 2023 and Q2 2024. These numbers clearly indicate that AMD is gaining ground on Intel across all segments of the x86 CPU market.
On the flip side, Intel has experienced a decline in market share in the x86 CPU market. Intel’s market share in desktops dropped from 80.6% to 77% year-on-year, while its share in laptops also decreased from the previous year. The numbers show a clear trend of AMD gaining traction at the expense of Intel, indicating a shift in the competitive landscape of the CPU market.
One significant factor contributing to AMD’s gains and Intel’s losses is the decline in sales of AMD’s SoCs, specifically the chips used in gaming consoles like Microsoft’s Xbox. With declining sales of gaming consoles, AMD is facing challenges in that segment, leading to a decrease in market share. This cyclical nature of game consoles and the shift towards the end of the current console generation have played a role in impacting AMD’s overall sales numbers.
While AMD is making significant strides in the x86 CPU market, the overall trendlines indicate a shift in the competitive dynamics between Intel and AMD. AMD’s growth in market share in desktops, laptops, and servers reflects a changing landscape where AMD is becoming a more formidable competitor to Intel. The upcoming quarters will provide further insights into how these trends evolve and whether AMD can sustain its momentum in the market.
Intel’s Dominance and Future Outlook
Despite facing challenges from AMD’s increasing market share, Intel still maintains a dominant position in desktops, laptops, and servers, owning the majority of market share in all three segments. While the current figures show a shift in market dynamics favoring AMD, it is essential to note that Intel remains a key player in the PC processor market. The road ahead will determine how Intel adapts to the changing landscape and competes with AMD in this evolving market scenario.
The latest data from Mercury Research highlights the changing landscape of the x86 CPU market, with AMD gaining ground on Intel in market share across desktops, laptops, and servers. While Intel continues to hold a significant position in the market, the increasing competition from AMD signals a shift in the dynamics of the CPU market. The coming quarters will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of both Intel and AMD in this highly competitive market.
