Recently, two US Congressmen have raised concerns over the security risks posed by TP-Link networking products. Republican Representative John Moolenaar and Democratic Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi have called on the Biden administration to launch an investigation into the potential for these products to be exploited for spying on Americans or cyber attacks.

National Security Risks

The Congressmen have formally requested an investigation from the US Department of Commerce, citing national security risks associated with TP-Link products. The Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party has highlighted the vulnerabilities and compliance issues with PRC law that make TP-Link products particularly concerning.

TP-Link products are widely used in the US, including in critical facilities such as military bases. Last year, TP-Link routers were used in an attack on European foreign affairs organizations. The routers were infected with malware, allowing attackers to gain control over the network and access sensitive information.

While TP-Link is the focus of the current investigation request, it is not the only manufacturer that can be exploited for cyber attacks. Companies like Cisco and Netgear have also been used by foreign adversaries to launch attacks. This highlights a broader issue of security vulnerabilities in networking products that need to be addressed.

There is a lack of awareness among end users about the potential for router-based attacks. While most people are diligent about updating their devices and PC software for security reasons, many have never updated their router’s firmware. This presents a significant risk as outdated firmware can be exploited by attackers.

The concerns raised over TP-Link networking products are part of a larger issue of cybersecurity in networking devices. The call for an investigation is warranted given the national security risks involved. It is crucial for users to stay informed about updates and security practices to protect themselves from potential cyber threats.
