In a recent video by game historian Liam Robertson, details of the cancelled plans for ‘Crash Bandicoot 5’ and a Switch version of Crash Team Rumble were revealed. It was reported that Toys for Bob had intentions of developing a Switch version of Crash Team Rumble. However, this project was ultimately cancelled by Activision due to the lukewarm reception of the game on other platforms.
Crash 5 was expected to feature the ‘Academy of Evil’ from Crash Twinsanity, with a storyline that would explore a crossover with Spyro the Dragon. The main antagonist ‘Uka Uka’ was set to make a return in the game. The plan was to have both Crash and Spyro as playable characters, with the possibility of playing them separately or together – even allowing Crash to ride on Spyro’s back. Unfortunately, Toys for Bob had only been a few months into development before Activision decided to cancel the project.
The decision to cancel Crash 5 came after the release of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time did not meet the “high sales targets” internally. Former employees have criticized the lack of a Nintendo Switch version at launch, calling it a “critical mistake.” Activision’s choice to scrap the game’s development has left fans wondering if they will ever see Crash Bandicoot (and Spyro) make a return now that Microsoft owns Activision Blizzard.
With Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the future of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro franchises remains uncertain. Fans are hopeful that these beloved characters will make a comeback in some form, whether it be through new game releases, remasters, or even reimaginings. The potential for a collaboration between Crash and Spyro has excited many players, and there is a sense of anticipation for what the future holds for these iconic characters.
