The Driver TV series, which was announced back in 2021 to be released alongside a gamer-focused streaming service called Binge, has officially been scrapped. The production company behind the live action series has also been shut down. This news was brought to light by Game File, indicating that the series is no longer in development.
Uncertain Fate
While the Driver series as we know it may be dead in the water, an Ubisoft spokesperson mentioned that they are “actively working on other exciting projects related to the franchise.” This leaves fans wondering what the future holds for the beloved series. The cancellation of the TV series was somewhat expected, given the lack of any public attachment of a writer, director, or star to the project.
Binge, the gaming-focused streaming service that was supposed to launch alongside the Driver series, never took off the ground. Co-founded by an individual who boasts “disrupting tomorrow” as their role on LinkedIn, Binge was an ambitious endeavor that ultimately failed to gain traction. The service was last seen promoting Web3 and “Watch-To-Earn” concepts, which may have been ahead of its time or simply not appealing to the target audience.
The Driver video game franchise has also been dormant since the release of Driver: San Francisco in 2011. The game, which featured an interesting gameplay mechanic where players controlled a coma patient with the ability to possess different drivers, received moderate reviews. Despite its unique concept, the series failed to evolve and capture the attention of gamers in recent years.
Speculation on Future Projects
With Ubisoft hinting at “exciting projects” related to the Driver franchise, fans are left to ponder what form these projects may take. While it is unclear whether a new video game is in the works, Ubisoft’s track record of game development and release can be unpredictable. The possibility of a new Driver game or even merchandise bearing the “Driver” branding remains a tantalizing prospect for fans.
The demise of the Driver TV series and the failure of the Binge streaming service highlight the challenges of bringing a beloved franchise to new mediums. While the future of the Driver series may be uncertain, the passion of fans and the potential for innovative projects from Ubisoft offer a glimmer of hope for the franchise’s revival. Only time will tell what lies ahead for the Driver universe.
