The Battlestar Galactica reboot has hit a roadblock as Peacock has decided to drop the show after five years in development. Despite not formally ordering it to series during this time, Universal Content Productions (UCP) is still determined to find a new home for the show, now that Peacock is out of the picture.

With Peacock no longer in the picture, UCP is looking to shop the Battlestar Galactica reboot to other outlets. One of the most likely options within UCP’s parent company, Comcast, would be Syfy. Syfy previously aired the 2003 Battlestar Galactica reboot and could be interested in picking up the new iteration of the beloved sci-fi series. Additionally, other major streaming platforms might also express interest in acquiring the show.

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail was the driving force behind the Battlestar Galactica reboot, which was intended to exist within the continuity established by the 2003 miniseries and its subsequent series. Although Michael Lesslie was initially hired to write the show in 2020, he left the project the following year. Derek Simonds took over as the showrunner and writer at the beginning of 2024, bringing a fresh perspective to the series.

The original Battlestar Galactica, created by Glen A. Larson in 1978 for ABC, followed a space fleet of survivors fleeing from the Cylons. The show’s central premise revolved around the Battlestar Galactica protecting the fleet as they searched for Earth, hoping to find safety and refuge. Despite the show’s popularity, it only lasted a single season on ABC.

Following the original series, Syfy made several attempts to keep the franchise alive with spin-offs such as Caprica and Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. However, these prequels failed to gain traction and were short-lived. In 2020, X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg was attached to a Battlestar Galactica movie independent of Esmail’s reboot, but there have been no recent updates on the project.

The future of the Battlestar Galactica reboot remains uncertain as UCP seeks a new platform for the series. Despite setbacks and changes behind the scenes, fans of the iconic sci-fi franchise remain hopeful for another chapter in the saga of humanity’s fight for survival in a hostile universe.
