Southwest Airlines, a major carrier with a strong presence in the aviation industry, has recently announced a partnership with Archer Aviation, a prominent urban air mobility startup. This collaboration aims to explore the possibilities of an air taxi service using Archer’s battery-powered, four-passenger, tilt-rotor Midnight aircraft. The unique design of these aircraft allows for vertical takeoff and landing, similar to that of a helicopter. Southwest Airlines will leverage its access to 14 California airports to support the operation of this air taxi service.
The agreement between Southwest Airlines and Archer Aviation reflects a growing confidence in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) startups. These innovative companies are paving the way for intercity air travel, with promises of significantly reduced travel times. Archer claims that trips that typically take 60-90 minutes by car can be completed in just 10-20 minutes using their air taxis. This partnership highlights the potential for collaboration between established airlines and emerging eVTOL manufacturers.
While the future of urban air mobility seems promising, there are several challenges and regulatory hurdles that must be overcome. The certification process for eVTOL aircraft is a slow and uncertain process, with the FAA yet to grant full certification to any eVTOL company. Changes to the certification process, including the reclassification of eVTOL as a “power lift” aircraft, have introduced additional uncertainties regarding commercialization. It may take several more years before eVTOL companies receive full approval from the FAA.
Archer Aviation, having recently received a Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, is on track to launch its on-demand air taxi service by the end of 2025. The company has secured significant orders from major airlines, including a $1 billion order from United Airlines, and has partnered with global automaker Stellantis to mass-produce its eVTOL craft. Despite facing legal challenges and regulatory complexities, Archer is poised to make a mark in the urban air mobility space.
As part of the partnership, Archer Aviation will collaborate with Southwest Airlines and its partners to develop an air taxi network across California. This collaborative effort involves engaging with various stakeholders, including the unions of Southwest employees such as the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association. By fostering collaboration and embracing innovation, Southwest Airlines and Archer Aviation are at the forefront of shaping the future of urban air mobility.
