One year after the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, the team at Larian Studios reflects on the impact of the game’s infamous bear nookie scene. During the PAX West 2024 Baldur’s Gate 3: A Retrospective panel, the developers discussed how showcasing this scene before the game’s launch changed the public’s perception of the project.

When Larian Studios first revealed the bear scene in a pre-launch livestream, it caused a stir on the internet. Memes circulated, sparking mild controversy, yet drawing increased attention to the game. Swen Vincke, the game’s director, recalled the excitement within the publishing team when they realized they had been banned on TikTok due to the scene. Even some team members’ mothers raised eyebrows at the unconventional content.

Vincke explained that there was internal debate about whether to showcase the bear scene before the game’s release. The team wanted the audience to have a say in what was revealed but also hesitated about potentially more explicit content that could have been chosen instead. Lead writer Adam Smith joked about the possibility of being banned on more than just TikTok if a different scene had been shown.

Despite the initial shock value, the team decided to stick with the bear nookie scene as it encapsulated the essence of Baldur’s Gate 3. They wanted to portray the game as a funny, sometimes raunchy, and mature experience where almost anything goes. Additionally, Larian Studios also showcased a romance scene with Karlach to demonstrate the game’s depth and variety of relationships. Smith emphasized the importance of showcasing different types of moments to prevent the game from being misunderstood as solely humorous.

The infamous bear nookie scene in Baldur’s Gate 3 may have initially stirred controversy, but it ultimately played a crucial role in shaping the game’s identity. By embracing unconventional and diverse content, Larian Studios successfully captured the attention of players and demonstrated that Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game that offers a wide range of experiences beyond mere humor.
