The upcoming game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, has stirred up controversy among fans for its lack of romance options, a departure from traditional Persona games developed by Atlus. This new RPG, set to release on October 11, has taken a different approach to character relationships, as revealed in a recent Japanese Q&A segment.
Unlike previous Persona games, Metaphor: ReFantazio will not include any romantic scenes with bond characters. The game’s director, Katsura Hashino, explained that the bond system in this new RPG is vastly different from the one used in Atlus games. This decision has surprised many fans, as romance has always been a central feature in Persona titles.
It is important to note that Metaphor: ReFantazio is not being developed by P-Studio at Atlus, the team behind the Persona series. Instead, the game is being created by Studio Zero, known for their work on Catherine: Full Body. This shift in development has led to a change in the core mechanics of the game, including the removal of romance options.
While romance may be off the table, players can still enhance their relationships with characters to unlock new Archetypes. These Archetypes serve as combat classes for characters, allowing players to customize their party members’ abilities. This feature was highlighted in Hashino’s recent presentation, showcasing the depth of character progression in Metaphor: ReFantazio.
The absence of romance options in Metaphor: ReFantazio marks a significant departure from the traditional Persona games fans are accustomed to. While some may be disappointed by this change, the inclusion of the Archetype system offers a new and innovative way to engage with the game’s characters. As the release date approaches, it will be interesting to see how these changes impact the overall gameplay experience for players.
