Macross Plus fans have reason to celebrate as a new Blu-ray release of the beloved anime series is finally on the horizon. The series, also known as Robotech in the west, has been embroiled in a legal battle for decades that put a halt to its availability outside of Japan. However, after negotiations between the involved parties reached a resolution in 2021, Anime Limited announced plans to release a Macross Plus Ultimate Edition Blu-ray on September 30. This marks the first time that the series will be available in this format in the US.
The Macross Plus Ultimate Edition Blu-ray is a deluxe $190 package that includes a wealth of extra content for fans to enjoy. In addition to the four-episode original video anime series from 1994, the set comes in a sleek slipcase and includes a hardcover book detailing the production of the series through staff interviews and concept art material. Nine art cards and an A4 poster are also included in the box set.
On the Blu-ray discs themselves, viewers can look forward to watching both the movie and OVA versions of Macross Plus, with the option of English and Japanese dubs. Additionally, there will be an interview with chief director Shoji Kawamori and other bonus features to enhance the viewing experience.
The plot of Macross Plus is set in the year 2040 on the distant planet Eden, where former childhood friends Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman find themselves in a rivalry as test pilots of competing teams. As they vie for the next generation of variable mecha fighters, they must also confront their shared history involving their mutual love interest, Myung Fang Lone. Myung has returned as the manager of Sharon Apple, an AI pop star and the galaxy’s top singing sensation. When Sharon Apple’s artificial intelligence evolves, Isamu, Myung, and Guld must navigate their complex past as Sharon Apple gains consciousness and takes control of the Macross battle fortress.
Aside from the Macross Plus Blu-ray release, fans can also anticipate the arrival of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku on Blu-ray soon. This series offers a thrilling blend of ninjas, samurai, and action with a touch of horror, making it a must-watch for fans of the genre. After a successful debut last year, this anime is sure to captivate audiences with its unique storyline and dynamic characters.
The upcoming Macross Plus Blu-ray release and the arrival of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku on Blu-ray are exciting developments for anime fans. With a wealth of content and bonus features to enjoy, these releases offer a fantastic opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of these captivating series.
