Announcing this move that many had anticipated, the company is now demanding that users who wish to share their accounts with individuals outside their household pay an additional fee or create an entirely new account. Disney’s statement emphasizes that its platform is designed for use within the same household. Historically, however, users have routinely shared their credentials with friends and family, creating a disconnect between the company’s stated policies and consumer practices. This indulgence is officially over, as Disney takes definitive measures to regulate usage and monetize its service more effectively.
The new policy introduces the concept of the “Extra Member.” For an additional monthly fee, existing account holders can invite one individual outside their immediate household to access their Disney+ account. In the United States, opting for an Extra Member will cost $7 for those subscribed to Disney+ Basic and $10 for Disney+ Premium. This approach offers a semblance of flexibility while inherently steering users towards compliance with the platform’s core guidelines regarding household usage.
It is important to note that the capacity to add an Extra Member is limited to a single person per account. Moreover, subscribers benefiting from a bundled Disney offering or those who access Disney+ through partner deals are not eligible for this feature, showcasing the company’s intention to delineate its revenue sources clearly.
For those unable or unwilling to pay this additional charge, the alternative is simple: creating a new Disney+ account. Fortunately, there is an offer for profile transfer, which enables the original account owner to shift a profile to the newly created account. As part of the new enforcement, users traveling away from their main location might encounter prompts indicating that their connection does not align with the primary account’s registered household. To accommodate traveling users, Disney includes an “Away From Home” feature, potentially allowing users to bypass some restrictions when accessing their account on the road. This measure acknowledges the modern consumer’s mobility, yet adds extra complexity to an already intricate system of usage rights.
